Can Britney Spears Make A Successful Comeback?

In the late 1990’s Britney Spears brought teen pop back into the world of music, and she became a worldwide success.
Britney Jean Spears was born in Kentwood, LA, in 1981, and from an early age she showed promise as a rising music star, with appearances on Star Search which was a nationally televised program. When she was eight years old she auditioned for the Mickey Mouse Club, but she was told she was too young. One of the producers introduced her to an agent in New York and she spent the next three years at the Professional Performing Arts School.
She returned to the Disney Studios to audition once again for the Mickey Mouse Club and this time Britney Spears came through and became a Mousketeer. Some of her fellow performers included Justin Timberlake with whom she had a relationship later on, and Christina Aguilera. Unfortunately the show was cancelled two years later, so she returned to New York and began auditioning for pop bands. She got her big break when she was signed with Jive Records.
Britney Spears became a pop music phenomenon and sold millions of records. Part of her success was through her sex appeal which was evident in her video and lyrics for “Baby One More Time.” In that controversial video she projected an innocent look for her female fans, but her very provocative look certainly enticed the male fans. She was well on her way to being a major music star with her first three albums topping the charts, and many of her songs being used as ringtones the world over.
Britney Spears’ on stage wardrobe (or lack of it, as some people have commented) gave her the appearance of a brazen hussy, whereas off stage she was portraying herself as a virginal angel, by preaching abstinence before marriage. She also became known as a “party girl” and was often seen out with Paris Hilton.
In 2004 Britney Spears’ star began to fall when she had a disastrous 2 day marriage to a childhood friend. That same year she started a relationship with Kevin Federline, a former back-up dancer, and they married in September 2004. The couple attracted unwanted attention when they agreed to star in “Chaotic”, a reality show based on their own home videos. It was absolutely panned by the critics.
In 2005 Britney Spears hit the headlines again with her announcement that she was pregnant with her first child. She subsequently went on to have a second child, so she now had two boys. She divorced Federline and fought many custody battles to keep her two boys, but she lost out to Kevin.
Britney Spears lost the plot for a while in 2007, as pictures were shown of her shaving off her hair. She worked on a comeback album called “Blackout” and performed a few shows, but it was her disastrous performance at the MTV Music Awards which had the town talking. Her album failed to impress the public and failed to achieve platinum within its’ first year of release.
In 2008 Britney Spears went back to court to win custody of her children but once again she lost. Her public image received further blows when she made a couple of court appearances and was placed on involuntary psychiatric hold twice in one month. A song from her album “Blackout” became her first number one single in a decade and that song was “Womanizer.” She has since put together her “Circus” show full of ballads and up-tempo dance numbers, and is currently doing a worldwide tour.
Britney Spears has failed to shine for a lot of her fans and feel that she is a fallen music star. It will be interesting to see if this worldwide tour will once again bring her into prominence.
