Can Katie Holmes Be A Star In Her Own Right?

Katie Holmes wasn’t known very well until her appearance as Joey Potter in the hit TV series Dawson’s Creek. She has since been in many movies and most recently live theater.

Katie was born in Toledo, Ohio and started out acting in productions at her local High School Theater. After meeting with a manager and auditioning for a part in the movie Ice Storm, which she won in 1997, she sent an audition tape for a new TV show called Dawson’s Creek. As a result of the audition she landed the part of Joey Potter in 1998.

She was two months premature when born in 1978 and only weighed four pounds. Katie was the youngest in a family of three sisters and one brother. As a teenager she attended a modeling school and at the age of sixteen, she was asked by her teacher to enter a modeling competition with the other girls in her class to be held in New York. Katie won many awards competing in the International Modeling and Talent Association for singing, dancing and reciting a monologue from To Kill A Mockingbird.

Katie left New York for Los Angeles when she was seventeen to audition for movies, and it was on her second audition that she won the role in The Ice Storm. She was finally a movie star!

Her first year on Dawson’s Creek saw her also play roles in two movies and she won Best Breakthrough Female Performance in the 1999 MTV Movie Awards for Disturbing Behavior. She has since completed a string of movies and has been successful, but she has not yet achieved the major movie star status.

In 2005, Katie Holmes began a relationship with Tom Cruise, which was frowned on at the time because of the sixteen year age difference. In a relatively short time, it was only two months, Katie and Tom became engaged. Unfortunately the media attention directed at Katie was negative with many people thinking it was a publicity stunt to publicize their movies.

Katie was raised as a Catholic and her decision to join Tom Cruise as a member in the Church of Scientology, shocked many of her fans. In April 2006, Katie gave birth to their first child Suri, and Tom and Katie were married in November of the same year in Italy.

Katie and Tom have become great friends with David and Victoria Beckham, and some have suggested that Katie has tried to change her look by emulating Victoria. It started with the same haircut and some of their clothing has also been similar. Kate and Victoria had a falling out when Tom Cruise began to feel concerned that Posh’s (Victoria Beckham) influence over Katie was having a negative effect on her health. In retaliation Katie and Tom were not invited to Posh’s pre-birthday dinner.

However it has been revealed that at Posh’s recent 35th birthday party in April, Katie and Victoria had obviously patched up their differences.

It seems that while Katie is married to Tom Cruise she will always be in his shadow and we won’t get to see if she can be the major movie star she’d like to be.
